Looking for individual couselling, couples counselling, marriage counselling, or practical communication training in Brisbane (or online)? This FAQ answers common questions about how Heart of the Matter works, what to expect, what types of sessions are available, and how we help individuals, couples, and teams, improve communication, build trust, and create healthier outcomes.
What is couples counselling?
Couples counselling is a structured process that helps two people understand unhealthy patterns, improve communication, rebuild trust, and create healthier ways of relating.
It is not about deciding who is right or wrong. It is about understanding what is happening between you, learning better skills, and making practical changes that support the relationship.
All couples counselling at Heart of the Matter is based on scientifically researched methodologies such as The Gottman Method, Emotion Focussed Couples Therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy
Is this evidence-informed?
Yes, of course.
The material taught in this foundation session integrates principles from established, research-backed approaches used in modern therapy and relationship science, including:
The Gottman Method — decades of research on what makes relationships succeed or fail, including conflict repair, emotional attunement, and behavioural stability.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT / EFCT) — attachment-based work that helps partners create secure emotional bonds.
Attachment Theory — understanding how early relational patterns shape adult communication and emotional responses.
Nervous System Regulation Research — including polyvagal-informed approaches to understanding stress, fight/flight/freeze/fawn responses, and emotional flooding.
Structured Communication Frameworks — clear speaker–listener methods and repair protocols that reduce escalation.
Evidence-based conflict repair strategies — practical tools that prioritise safety, clarity, and behavioural follow-through.
The difference is that this session translates those therapeutic principles into structured, practical skills you can apply immediately in daily life.
This is not pop psychology.
It is not motivational speaking.
It is not vague “just communicate better” advice.
It is practical application grounded in relationship science and clinical experience.
Is couples counselling the same as marriage counselling?
In most cases, yes. Many people use the terms interchangeably.
Marriage counselling usually refers to support for married couples, while couples counselling can also include engaged, de facto, dating, or long-term committed partners. The focus is the relationship itself, not the label.
Do you teach practical communication skills?
Yes… and more
We offer practical communication training grounded in psychology, nervous system regulation, and structured dialogue methods.
We teach:
How to listen properly
How to speak without escalating conflict
How to validate without collapsing
How to set boundaries clearly
This applies to marriages, parenting, leadership, and business communication.
What can couples counselling help with?
Sometimes the issue is not the issue. The argument about dishes is rarely about dishes. It is often about feeling unheard, unimportant, alone, criticised, or unsafe.
Couples counselling can help with:
Do we need to be in crisis to start?
No.
In fact, the earlier you seek support, the easier it often is to change the pattern. Many couples wait until they are exhausted, resentful, or emotionally shut down. Counselling can be helpful well before things reach that point.
