Nobody loves conflict but it is an essential part of life. When done well, through a healthy framework, conflict can be a way to identify useful opportunities for growth.
A mediation is simply a structured approach to resolving conflict. Your mediator will guide you through a process designed to help resolve your differences in a constructive manner.
You mediator won’t attempt to solve the problem on your behalf. Rather, your mediator will help all those involved to address the conflict, to listen to each other’s points of view, and to reach a mutually acceptable settlement.
Your mediator knows that many people find mediation uncomfortable. He or she will do everything possible to create a safe environment, and will monitor your emotional state throughout the process. You will be given ample opportunity to be heard, and to listen to your colleague’s point of view.
“Understanding Precedes Resolution” ~ Dr John Gottman
In our approach to mediation, we hold a core belief that true understanding is the foundation upon which any lasting resolution is built. This principle guides every step of our process, ensuring that each participant’s voice is heard, respected, and valued.
Our mediation sessions are designed around the transformative power of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and the Gottman Method, two methodologies renowned for their effectiveness in fostering deep understanding, empathy, and constructive conflict resolution.
NVC guides us to express our needs and feelings clearly and listen to others with empathy and compassion. It’s an approach that transforms potential conflicts into opportunities for connection, understanding, and mutual growth. Through NVC, we learn to speak from the heart, hear others’ needs, and discover the depth of our common humanity.
Incorporating the Gottman Method principles, our mediation process focuses on building strong relationships through effective communication, understanding, and respect. This method teaches us to manage conflicts constructively, appreciate each other’s perspectives, and create a shared meaning within our interactions. It’s about turning towards each other with curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to understand and collaborate.
Our integrated approach aims not merely to resolve disputes but to deepen the understanding and connection between all parties involved. We believe that by fostering an environment of respect, empathy, and open communication, we can uncover solutions that are beneficial and satisfying for everyone involved.
As we embark on this journey together, we invite you to engage with an open heart and mind. Our commitment is to provide a respectful, empathetic space where every individual feels seen, heard, and understood. Through our collaborative efforts, we will navigate the complexities of conflict with the goal of reaching lasting, meaningful resolutions.
We are here to support you through this process, every step of the way. Join us in creating a path forward that honors each person’s needs, fosters mutual respect, and strengthens connections. Together, we can transform conflict into an opportunity for growth and deeper understanding.
To understand the unique perspectives and needs of each party involved in the conflict.
To facilitate a structured dialogue where parties can communicate openly, understand each other’s perspectives, and work towards a resolution.
To create a documented agreement that outlines the resolution and future steps agreed upon by all parties.
To ensure the agreements are implemented effectively and to address any subsequent concerns or adjustments needed.
Our collective approach to mediation fosters a constructive, solution-focused dialogue that honors individual perspectives while steering towards collaborative outcomes. Designed to enhance the work environment, this process tackles conflicts with empathy, clarity, and an unwavering commitment to mutual respect.
Ground Rules for Effective Mediation in a Professional Environment
To ensure a constructive and dignified mediation process, we collectively commit to the following principles, designed to uphold professionalism and respect:
Exercise Self-Control: We commit to speaking one at a time, embodying patience and restraint. This practice ensures that everyone is heard and respected equally, fostering a supportive environment for open dialogue.
Practice Active Listening: We dedicate ourselves to listening deeply and with full presence, striving to understand the message behind the words. This commitment to active listening allows us to truly hear each other and to learn fresh information we may not be aware of.
Seek Clarity Before Responding: By paraphrasing what we’ve heard, we confirm our understanding, ensuring that our communication is clear and accurate. This step is crucial for building a shared foundation of understanding.
Make Observations not Assumptions: We focus our discussions on observable facts and experiences, steering clear of interpretations and assumptions. This approach helps us stay connected to the validity of each person’s experience, respecting we may see things differently, but remaining true to our shared commitment to finding a resolution.
Uphold Integrity: We engage in honest and transparent communication, sharing our true thoughts and feelings. This integrity is the cornerstone of trust and authenticity within our mediation process.
Cultivate Empathy: We make a concerted effort to understand and empathise with perspectives different from our own. Recognizing and valuing diverse viewpoints enriches our dialogue and fosters mutual respect and understanding.
Commitment to Growth: We accept that people make mistakes, ourselves included, and we now turn toward differences as opportunities for growth and learning.
Collaborate With Purpose: Together, we engage in collaborative problem-solving, drawing on the collective wisdom of the group to identify solutions that meet everyone’s needs. This cooperative approach underscores our commitment to finding mutually beneficial outcomes.
Communicate Needs Clearly: We articulate our needs and boundaries with clarity and precision, advocating for ourselves while maintaining respect for others’ needs and boundaries.
Honor Confidentiality: We maintain the confidentiality of what is shared in mediation, protecting the privacy and trust of the process. This commitment ensures a safe space for everyone to express themselves fully and honestly.
